The various performance patterns of piano four hands could be traced back to the 17th century, and in spite that the style and definition of fantasy changed during several centuries, ‘freedom and fantasy’ remained permanent and main characters. This thesis analyzes Schubert’s Fantasy for Piano Four Hands in C Minor, D. 48. Firstly, it introduces Schubert’s biography and musical style influenced by Romanticism. Secondly, it recites the historical definition of piano four hands and fantasy. Finally, through the musical structure, rhythm patterns, tonality, harmony, timbre, and dynamics, this part serves to investigate and make conclusion. For the musical structure, according to the length of passages and velocity, the composer divided it into four sections and transitions. For the rhythm patterns, the continually repeated rhythm and notes of accent remains the major characters in this work. For the tonality and harmony, it expresses various ways of modulation which Schubert often used, such as chromatic median-relationship modulation, enharmonic modulation, and common-chord modulation. For the harmony, it comes with chromaticism, secondary dominants, Neapolitan sixth chord, Picardi third, diminished seventh chord, augmented triads, and diminished triads. For the timbre and dynamics, Schubert is good at setting the modulation of volume, so as to shift the atmosphere, while stressing the dramatically musical tension as well. Due to my investigation, Schubert’s compositions are worth studying. Through my research and analysis, this thesis aims to provide concrete references for piano players, teachers, and future scholars. Hou, Chih–Cheng 侯志正 2016 學位論文 ; thesis 77 zh-TW
