The author grew up in Baihe and once participated in exploitation of limestone ore together with father during childhood. The present study is motivated by the author’s deep memory of the three white falls caused by mining in Pillow Mountain. There is few data on Baihe lime industry. Through literature review and collection of oral historical data by field investigation, this study discusses the following three points: 1. Developmental process of Baihe lime industry; 2. Formation and influence of Baihe lime industry culture; 3. Present situation and prospect of Baihe lime industry. Conclusions and findings of this study include: 1. Baihe lime industry developed vigorously during Japanese rule as a response to the demand of sugar manufacturing. Later, mining is terminated and this industry is transformed due to decline of sugar industry and consideration of environmental protection. 2. Baihe lime industry is composed of three major items-mining, transporting and lime firing, which evolve with the development of the times and form characteristic lime industry culture. 3. As a result of closure of mine and change of market, Baihe lime industry has turned to foreign raw material importation, production curtailing and manufacturing device improvement, and transformed into importer. Through field investigation, the author perceives the importance and emergency of preserving Baihe lime industry culture and suggests relevant interviewees to establish a lime tourism factory. This proposal has been recognized by one of the interviewees-Chairman of Baihe District Overall Construction Association of Tainan City, and is under planning. It is expected that the suggestion can be realized as early as possible so that Baihe lime industry culture will be continued in another form.
