This research aimed to find out the group therapeutic factors that cause changes of members in the loss of romantic relationship group counseling. The group participants consist of five students who were recruited from colleges in southern Taiwan, each member was broke up within one year and in a state of feeling not pass through the break up. The members were tested with Coping to Dissolution Scale and Cognitive Adaptation to Dissolution Scale before and after the sessions, in order to measure the effectiveness of group activities. Besides, a review of group important events and test of Group Therapeutic Factors Scale were conducted before the end of every session, together to explore the group therapeutic factors that cause changes of members.the coucelusions are presented below:
1.The analysis of Coping to Dissolution Scale and Cognitive Adaptation to Dissolution Scale revealed group counseling could actually help members to recover from loss of romantic relationship and improve their cognition.
2.The study found that most important therapeutic factors in therapy group counseling were “positive feeling toward the group” and “cognitive gains”. Researcher believed through the support, listening, empathy, and the objective advice of leader in group activities, let the members to review their changes of behaviors and thoughts after loss of romantic relationship. So the members could understood the problems in their past romantic relationship and recover from broke up.
3.Researcher also found that as the increase of group activities, the average scores of group therapeutic factors had a positive growth. The result indicated the more time members stayed in the group, the more help they could get from the group therapeutic factors.
4.In the beginning phase, therapy factor perceived by the members were “positive feeling toward the group”, "cognitive gains”, “self-disclosure and sharing”, ”offering suggestion” and “universality”; following “solicitation of action abilities” and "altruism" were appeared in the working phase; in the final phase, the influence of “offering suggestion” would getting less and less, in the opposite, the enhancement of members’ self-awareness would bring the hope of bright future.
Suggestions for group counseling practician, and further study were provided.
