Ulay, the autonomous district of the indigenous community of Tayal in Taiwan, is a region with such potential due to its ethnic and cultural richness. However, a field survey in the Old Street of Ulay reveals that most of the merchandise and souvenirs sold are commercial products without any local character. As a native born and bred in Ulay, the researcher was inspired to design her thesis research to fill this niche. This thesis project was conducted in three stages. Firstly, a review of the literature on Tayal culture was done through accessing official electronic archives and other repositories. Secondly, Saussure’s methods on semiotics were utilised to extract the Tayal elements to serve as the foundation for the design concept. The finalised designs were then digitised, and prototypes were printed in 3D. Lastly, the pieces went through processes of casting, welding, refining, enamel colouring etc.; the end product of a seven-piece jewelry collection named “Lightly dancing in Tayal” was then publicly exhibited as part of the final project. Roland Barthes’Significance Analysis System (Myth) was used as a theoretical framework to explain the symbolic meaning and cultural implications of the pieces, based on parameters such as form, colour, material and function, providing further understanding of the design concept and process. This research combines digital and traditional techniques, and will be useful as a reference for future design and development of jewelry pieces based on indigenous culture of other localities in Taiwan.
