With this step-dividing method, this work compares the differences between forward and backward treadmill walking by performing multi-scale entropy (MSE) analysis on a number of COP features.   Nine health young people participated this experiment. Each experimental trail consist of two minute quite standing, 10 minute walking and two minute quiet standing. By changing walking direction, this process was repeated after five minute rest. Every tested subject perform such a walking experimental trial once for three days with the order of the walking directions randomly specified. Features were developed for the entire step, the single-stance and the double-stance phases. For these three phases, we compared the means, standard deviations and multisclae entropy of a number of COP features of backward and forward walking. The tested COP features include sway area, mean distance, mean frequency, mean velocity, anterior–posterior direction mean velocity and medio-lateral direction mean velocity.   The experimental results show that statistically significant difference between the forward and backward walking can be detected by many of the tested features. These results demonstrate that backward walking is not simply a time-reversing version of forward walking and may therefore provide different rehabilitation functions.
