For the Massive MIMO system, increasing both the numbers of the antennas in the smartphone and base station can lead to higher channel capacity. An eight-antenna array for the 8 x 8 LTE MIMO system in the smartphone is hence presented to increase the channel capacity. The antenna array can cover the 3500 MHz LTE band (3400~3600 MHz), which is a global mobile broadband recently identified by WRC-15 for mobile communication system in the future. The eight-antenna array is formed by two quad-antenna arrays disposed along two long side edges of the system ground plane in the smartphone. The length and width of a quad-antenna array is respectively 60 mm and 1 mm only, which is suitable for application in the smartphone with a large display panel. The antenna efficiency of the eight antennas is better than 45% and the ECC is less than 0.1 between any two antennas thereof. The channel capacity of the eight-antenna array can reach about 37 bps/Hz for the 8 x 8 LTE MIMO system at 20-dB signal-to-noise (SNR). The measured data from the LTE MIMO measurement system in the OTA (over-the-air) testing verify the calculated results.
