The study, using the professional learning community for teachers in Kaohsiung Ding Dong Elementary School as the research subject, was conducted by adopting the case study method with the aim of exploring what factors prompted the teachers to join the community, how the community operated, how the operating modes were formed, the advantageous and disadvantageous factors which influenced the community’s operation, and the effectiveness of the implementation. After we observed and participated in the community, used the semi-structured interview, examined the notes, and analyzed the relating data we collected, we concluded:
1.The supports from the administrative superiors can effectively increase the teachers’ participation in the professional learning community.
2.The purposes of the professional learning community for teachers were to dialogue, learn from each other and achieve the consensus.
3.The operating mode of the community was a circulative process of deciding the themes, sharing experiences and generalizing the key points.
4.The contents of the community’s operation contained the practice of the theories, group discussions and panel sharing.
5.The advantageous factors of the community’s operation were knowledge-oriented guidance, trust and sharing, and respecting the diversity.
6.The disadvantageous factors of the community’s operation contained the available time, the heavy workload, and the fear of expressing one’s opinions.
7.By participating in the community, the teachers improved interdisciplinary knowledge, interpersonal interactions, and teaching thoughts as well as continued the lifetime learning.
Finally, according to the conclusions mentioned above, this study offered some concrete suggestions to the schools that plan to establish the professional learning community for teachers for reference.
