Guo Chi is a writer in Yuan-Ming dynasties which is one of the three greatest masters as well as Song Lian and Liu Ji in poetry writing in early Ming dynasty; at the same time, he was honored as top four literary giants in Wuzhong district with Yang Ji, Chang Yu, and Hsu Ben which are pivotal in Ming dynasty. Nowadays, there are more research of his poetry, and only few researches on essay. Therefore, this research focus on Guo Chi essay and there are seven chapters in thesis.
In the first chapter, it is the research motivation and object which also includes literature review and methodology to draw up the research structure. And for the second chapter, there is the introduction of Guo Chi’s lifetime and background, especially about his career in Ming dynasty.
In chapter 3, there is an illustration about Guo Chi’s broad knowledge that he was born in Wu district where is a propitious place to gather people and culture. The majority of people inherited Confucianism and believed in Cheng zhu ne as mainstream thought in Wu district. Guo Chi advocated the essay was as the proof to support and explain his belief, so that his essay is beneficial to politics which was inherited Confucianism. Therefore, his literary style strived to three elements which were pattern, thought, and interest, and he supposed these were the key to work out the masterpieces. Besides, his motivation of writing was to spread out his life ideal and emotions which was referred to his life experience.
For chapter 4, there are the analysis of Guo Chi essays which divide into three categories as followings:
1. Narrative essay: includes biography and etc.
2. Rational essay: includes thesis, historic comment, and ode
3. Practical essay: includes preface, motto, eulogy, praise, admonition, inscription on stone tablet, and dirge.
There are the illustrations of Guo Chi writing style and art features in chapter 5, for his writing style:
1. Self-expression, and distinctive characteristic
2. Get rid of simulate and fulfill with art
3. Narrative in detail and analyze in logical way
And for his art features are clear conception, strict framework, and perfect rhetoric.
Furthermore, there are the comparisons in chapter 6 which comparative analysis with other writers like Song Lian and Liu Ji. Since these three had various background and experiences, their styles are different as well. It comes to the conclusion in chapter seven which sum up the key points from each chapter and to summary the contribution of Guo Chi in literary and also the influence on later generations.
