However, many people underestimate the importance as well as the difficulty of translating. They often assume that anyone who speaks a foreign language can translate, and thus the training of translator is not taken seriously. Although a lot of foreign language departments in Taiwan do offer translating courses, but the purpose of these courses are mostly to improve reading and writing abilities, rather than translating ability. Besides, even if the teachers want to teach translating, the might not know how to. Not every teacher has translating experience. As a result, many people take over translating tasks without proper training. The qualities of their translations might not be up to standard, so that people have doubt of the reliability of translation in general. This study is based on translating errors collected from an authentic translating task of newbie translators, aiming to provide suggestions for translation course. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is introduction, which contains the motivation, purpose, method and structure of this study. The second chapter describes the importance of translation and translator training situation of nowadays, discusses the definition of “translating ability”, clarifies two kinds of translation courses, outlines the usage of translation in foreign learning, and introduces several methods for translating teaching and error analysis. Chapter three demonstrates and classifies the translation errors and discusses about their causes. The last chapter is conclusion, which offers teaching suggestions based on translating errors.
