The research purposes include (1) to analyze the experience of the intervention integrating art materials into a solution focused group; and (2) to explore the experiences of domestic violence offenders regarding participating the group and to analyze their feedback. The literature review section discusses how art materials are integrated into an intervention in different stages of a group treatment, the effects of applying this intervention to a treatment group for domestic violence offenders, and the current status of treatment groups for domestic violence offenders in Taiwan. The research methods adopted were mainly qualitative while some were quantitative. There were 11 members in the group for domestic violence offenders being researched. Each session was 2-hour-long. And there were 8 sessions. After the group treatment was completed, the participants were asked to be interviewed. The data obtained from the observation records and the interviews after the treatment were analyzed based on phenomenology. Also, this study performed a comprehensive descriptive analysis by comparing the feedback questionnaires obtained at several different time points, in order to identify the effects and influences regarding this group.
The research results can be summarized into two parts: (1) In the aspect of the stages of the group treatment process, in the initial stage, the focus was on relationship building. Art materials were used to reduce the members’ defensiveness, so that they could explore their inner self and define their issues in a more specific way. The next stage is the group transformation stage. In this stage, their responding models in theirconflictual relationships were discussed and corresponding solutions were developed with the help of the group. In the group working stage, through the art materials, the members could become aware of their emotions and release them. Then, through group discussions, the members were motivated to make changes. Lastly, in the final stage, assignments were given to the members so that they could think about the conflicts in their life and their responding ability. Through feedbacks from other members, their motivation to make changes could be enhanced. (2) In the aspect of the experiences regarding the group of the domestic violence offenders, the art materials could empower the group members and help them to release their emotions. The group interactions were helpful for the members to explore and talk to their inner self. The researching findings above can be used as references for related agencies.
