Shan, S.J. 天主教單國璽樞機主教生死觀之研究 Tien-Ying Chao 趙天英 碩士 南華大學 生死學系碩士班 104 In 2012, Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-hsi passed away from lung cancer. He faced his mortality without fear, and embarked on many speaking tours, inspiring cancer patients and their families. This study investigates Cardinal Shan’s concept of life and death with three main focus of analysis: First, Cardinal Shan's concept of life and death, including his attitude toward death and the meaning of life. Second, the mentality and testimony of Cardinal Shan on his cancer. Third, Cardinal Shan's concept of death as it relates to the Catholic faith. The results show that Cardinal Shan's concept of life and death emphasized that one's attitude toward death must coexist with the meaning of life. He argued that questions about deaths can not stand alone, that is, questions about death are questions about life and death. When exploring the nature of death, we must explore the meaning of one's existence, so that death can teach us about life. Furthermore, the spiritual path taken by Cardinal Shan as he coped with his cancer through prayer, highlighted the strength of his faith. It made him face that life is finite, yet with his time running out, he was calm as death approached, embarking on a series of farewell speaking tours. Finally, Cardinal Shan's concepts of life and religion are closely linked. His interpretation of the nature of life is to enact great love, to live it. This is the essence of the Catholic faith.
