It is a matter of great concern for Venerable Master Hsing Yun as to how a platform allowing renewal of the Buddhism can be established for the joint promotion of Buddhist spirit and the society. The“Eighteen Lectures for Fo Guang Shan Community” provides a good overview of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s main ideas. Moreover, it also serves as the underlying principle that sustains the growth of Fo Guang Shan Sangha. Five precepts, the very fundamental elements of Buddhism, ensure the stability of sangha. Buddhism, a religion undergoing unceasing changes, relies on precepts to constitute a harmonized community. Therefore, focus will be placed on how Venerable Master Hsing Yun reinterprets the five fundamental precepts and modernizes the precepts for Humanistic Buddhism. Then the followed-up discussion would center mainly on the content of the“Eighteen Lectures for Fo Guang Shan Community” and its attempt to reform Buddhism. Hopefully a basis could be built to explore the efforts that Venerable Master Hsing Yun has made for the modernizing precepts in present days. From the“Eighteen Lectures for Fo Guang Shan Community”, encouragements to uphold the traditional precepts, participate the public affairs and value the equanimity between monastics and laypeople are highly emphasized. Venerable Master Hsing Yun generates Buddhists’ awareness on the issue of Buddhism’s future. The“Eighteen Lectures for Fo Guang Shan Community” could be a suggested solution to reach the consensus among Buddhists to create a systematic framework for sustainable development.
