This research project is meant to examine college students’ attitudes towards recreational activities, their involvement in such activities and mental health, in particularly the interconnection between college students’ backgrounds and the aforemmmentioned elements, and wherever possible, the predictability. The researcher has students at National Dong Hwa University as samples and data are collected through questionnaires. 1,100 questionniares are given out; with incomplete questionnaires filtered out, 958 valid questionnaires (87.09%) are received. Quantitative data are analyzed witth the following methodologies: independent-sample t-test, descriptive statistics, ANOVA and advanced regression analysis.
The research shows that (1) College students tend to hold positive attitudes towards recreational activities, among them a good understanding of recreational activities representing the highest percentage (2) Recreational activities college students indulge in very likely may be mass-media-related (3) College students score medium-high on mental health and have rather high self-worth (4) Students with different backgrounds vary greatly in attitudes towards recreational activities, involvement in such activities and mental health (5) Students’ backgrounds may be very helpful in predicting students’ attitudes towards recreational activities, involvement in recreational activities and mental health.
Lastly, the researcher means to offer college administrators and college counselors some constructive advice based on the analysis and conclusion.
