Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 教育與潛能開發學系 === 104 === "Teachers" are considered to be professionals with a relatively higher socio-economic status by the majority of the public. In addition, a teaching position is assumed as the ideal job for women. Single female teachers are known as the ideal marital partners while it is believed that both men and women should get married on coming of age. However, single female teachers’ choices of remaining single are influenced by various factors and being single contributes to different life experiences. The current study involved seven single female teachers in middle school in eastern Taiwan. Through in-depth interviews and a narrative approach, the forming process and determinants of their marital viewpoints were examined, and their life experiences were investigated. Seven participants were from different areas of Taiwan. Only one participant grew up in eastern Taiwan, and the other six participants had their teaching positions in eastern Taiwan at adult age. Nevertheless, the results of interview analysis reveal the consistency in the marital viewpoints and life experiences. The results showed as the following. First, the marital viewpoints of the single female teachers in middle school include that (1) marriage is a choice of life style; (2) family of origin has a significant influence on the formation of marital viewpoints; and (3) the main reason for remaining single is not yet finding a suitable match. Secondly, the life experiences of the single middle school female teachers in daily life include (1) they were financially independent and were masters of their time, yet, needed to handle daily life alone in any circumstances; (2) faced unequal treatment or criticism of being single in the workplace; (3) kept good relationships with family members, colleagues and friends even though their concerns of being single might become the possible pressure; (4) self-arranged leisure activities or advanced studies were the ways to ease work stress; and (5) self-affirmed planning the future life. Finally, the study provides suggestions for future research.
