Discussion on the Barrier and Transcend of Language from Case Studies of Deaf’s Life Experience

碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 諮商與臨床心理學系 === 104 === This thesis focuses on the occurrence of barriers/connection of human relationships through the understanding of life experiences belonging to people with hearing impairment. As a sign language interpreter, I start the subject from my own personal communication experiences with people who have hearing impairment. There are times when I have difficulties realizing my patients even when we are able to communication with verbal language. In order to find out the ways which the real interaction barriers occur, I try to use phenomenological psychology approach to explore the reasons and possible solutions for the situations mentioned above. The data were approached through the procedure of phenomenological reduction. The way of “reflexivity” is another approach. The results are listed as below: 1.People with hearing impairment have communication barriers even when being able to using the same sign language. The barriers between people with hearing impairment and those who are without may be linguistically overcome through sign languages or talk on paper, but there are deep layers of psychological barriers that require further attention and research. 2.Relationships are based on affections and emotions; so do people with hearing impairment. Therefore, the attitude of empathy is the key to cross the communication barriers. Somehow, there is an issue of unavoidable gap of existential loneliness. 3.To conclude, the barriers of communication are multi-layers. The first is linguistic barriers caused by the disability of hearing, which can be solved by learning of sign language or talk on paper. The second one is empathetic involvement, and the deepest layer; nevertheless, is the existential loneliness, the feeling of self-alienation which is pervasive and substantial. To recognize this unavoidable and unsolvable predicament; however, is the trigger of reconciliation with one’s self and physician-patient relationship.
