Taiwan has diverse cultures derived from migrant ancestors and cultures of Republic of China after WWII. These cultures have deeply rooted in Taiwanese consciousness and influenced the development of Taiwanese art. The study will explore how Cheng’s artwork touched the audience’s heart and aroused Taiwanese people’s cultural memories through images of ancestral cultures.
The study found that Cheng responded to the evolution of the times and presented Taiwanese consciousness through characters, images, and signs. Filled with Taiwanese consciousness, his work shows the identification with Taiwanese cultures. In his recent works, Cheng integrated eastern philosophies into his care for human beings and the environment based on the viewpoint of Mahatman (which means Greater I). In addition to continuous pursuit of artistic innovation, Cheng extends the identification with Taiwanese consciousness to the care for entire human beings and the environment. Such spirit is worth learning and handing down to younger artists.
