Summary:碩士 === 國立嘉義大學 === 教育學系研究所 === 104 === The effect of parenting style is profound in one’s lifetime. However, many parents don’t pay much attention to it. The neglect often result in some bad influences on their own children. The purpose of this study is to analyze the parenting styles of the characters in the Singaporean soap opera “I’m not Stupid”. Through text-based approach, the factors which affect parenting styles and the bad influences on children caused by negative parenting styles are also discussed. Based on the analysis and discussion, this study proposes some viewpoints for parents. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: 1. The main four parent characters mostly use negative parenting styles. 2. Negative parenting styles possibly result in bad influences on their own children. 3. Socioeconomic status of family, working experience, friends and colleagues, personal values, family structure, educational policy, and social values are the factors which can influence parenting styles. 4. Chinese parents mostly use negative parenting styles, but it doesn’t mean they don’t care about their children. Researcher should consider the differences of culture when doing similar studies.
