It also tried to figure out how some other variables such as gender, grade, and family structure differ on self-esteem, family function and depression of junior high school students. Finally, this study made predictions to the depression of junior high school students based on the self-esteem, and family function. In this study, our interviewees were mainly students from seven public junior high schools in Nantou County, from the first grade to the third grade. Five from the seven schools arrive in general areas, and the other two in remote areas. We used Sampling Theory, questionnaires, national primary and secondary Depression Inventory, Esteem Scale, and Family Functioning Scale as our tools and research methods for this research. The data collected from 549 valid questionnaires of 570 questionnaires, was analyzed by the statistics methods of descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Person’s correlation. The major findings were in the following: 1. The self-esteem, family functioning and depression of junior high school students are upper level. 2. Students with different genders did not show significant difference on self-esteem. 3. Students with different gender did not show significant difference on family function. 4. Students with different genders show a significant difference on depression. 5. Students from different grades did not show difference on self-esteem. 6. Students from different grades did not show difference on family functions. 7. Students from different grades show a great deal of difference on depression. 8. Students from different family structures show significant differences on both self-esteem and family functions. 9. Students from different family structures show significant differences on their depression. 10. There is a high correlation between the self-esteem and the depressions of our informants. 11. There is a negative correlation between family function and the depression of the high school students. 12. The depression of the junior high students can be predicted from their self-esteem and family function. Finally, based on our findings above, we made some suggestions to their family members, caretakers, teachers and counselling staffs. Keywords: self-esteem, family functioning, depression yii-jen wang 王以仁 學位論文 ; thesis 128 zh-TW
