It is hoped that the study promotes the understanding of handwriting relics of gǔwénzì, investigating of Eastern Zhou culture, reflecting the pre-imperial Qin civilization, and laying the groundwork for future study of Chinese script development. The introduction chapter states the study purpose, literature review, research materials and research method. Entitled The General Description of Writing by the Beginning of the Han Dynasty. The second chapter illustrates how the Eastern Zhou handwriting plays the critical role during the six writing development stages from the prehistoric age to the period between the end of the Qin and the beginning of Han dynasty. The third chapter The Writing of Bamboo and Wooden Slips (jiǎndú簡牘) in the Qin State displays the development course of Qin handwriting characters, recently unearthed bamboo and wooden slips and the analysis of their calligraphic style. The fourth chapter The Writing of Chu Silk Manuscript (jiǎnbó簡帛) in the Chu State presents the development course of Chu handwriting characters, recently unearthed Chu silk manuscript and the analysis of their calligraphic style. The fifth chapter The Writing of Jade Slips (méngshū盟書) in the Jin State displays the development course of Jin handwriting characters, recently unearthed jade slips and the analysis of their calligraphic style. The concluding chapter addresses that the value of Eastern Zhou handwriting characters casts inspiring light on the Chinese writing system development.
