Summary: | 碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 東南亞學系 === 104 === The study is an analysis of the content of Southeast Asian units in Taiwan’s senior high school geography textbooks through the viewpoint of politics of space. According to previous studies, the writing of textbooks is usually followed curriculum guidelines, and it was often affected by temporal and spatial backgrounds as well as the socio-political value and thus it showed specific political ideologies. The textbook was a form of representation, and there were a lot of interactions between knowledge and power behind it. In the view critical geography, geography was the product of culture contexts and political motivation, and it then influenced the representation of space and the other. The Southeast Asia chapters in the geography textbooks reproduced Southeast Asia in the textual form. The study adopts text analysis and document analysis. The study divides textbooks into three periods---the mainland period, the national compilation period, and the approval period. The study analyzes the political and economic relations between Taiwan and Southeast Asia presented by the textbooks under the curriculum guidelines from 1929 to 2008, and then it discusses the other images of the representation of Southeast Asia. The study shows that in the textbooks of the mainland period, the overseas Chinese in Nanyang established a bilateral political and economic relationships. From the point of view of blood and culture, Southeast Asia was our overseas extension. In the textbooks of the national compilation period, the issue of anti-communist formed a bond between Taiwan and Southeast Asia in order to justify the National Government’s firm will and resolution to fight against the communist party and hopefully re-occupy the mainland China. In the textbooks of the approval period, it showed that new political, economic and cultural connections are established in the era of globalization. As far as the interaction in politics and economy is concerned, Southeast Asia has not only been a neighboring area in space but also a very significant partner.
