To understand the behavioral intentions of drivers regarding alcohol-impaired driving, this study applied the theory of planned behavior proposed by Icek Ajzen. Structural equation modeling was employed to verify whether the proposed hypotheses were established. A questionnaire was distributed to drivers who attended road safety seminars because of a previous offense of alcohol-impaired driving and to general motor vehicle drivers. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed with 355 valid questionnaires being returned, reaching a valid return rate of 88.75%. The statistical methods of descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, analysis of variance, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling were applied. The conclusions are presented as follows: 1.Perceived behavioral control (the dominant factor), subjective norms, and attitude all exerted significantly positive influences on behavioral intention. 2.For the attitude dimension, saving money and thrill seeking were the behavioral motivations positively contributing to the occurrence of alcohol-impaired driving behaviors. Regarding the dimension of subjective norms, parents and family members indicated the lowest level of approval and exerted the maximal influence regarding the alcohol-impaired behavior of drivers. For the dimension of perceived behavioral control, driving on familiar road sections, and requiring use of the vehicle the next day were key factors prompting drivers to be involved in alcohol-impaired driving.
