Among the transportation sectors, road transport is the major source of carbon emissions. Therefore, how to reduce carbon emissions from automobiles becomes the most important topic for vehicle energy effi-ciency improvements the future. To reduce carbon emissions from automobiles, different tax rate by fuel efficiency and carbon emission standards have been adopted by many countries. Hence, the main purpose of this research is to estimate the effect of using EcoCAR subsidy policies to increase EcoCAR sales and reduce carbon emissions from automobiles. In this research, autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models were used to esti-mate the effects of EcoCAR subsidy policies on the sales of four different car models, including Toyoto Prius Hybrid in Taiwan market and Toyoto Prius Hybrid, Vitz, Camry, and Camry Hybrid in Japan market. The results show that EcoCAR subsidy policies have significant positive effects on the sales for both high fuel efficiency gaso-line cars and hybrid cars. The finding is consistent with the recent structural change in the Japanese automobile market where the market share of EcoCAR has been increasing steadily since the givernment implemented EcoCAR subsidy policies. This implies that EcoCAR subsidy policies can be applied to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions from automobiles. Especially the subsidy of high fuel efficiency gasoline cars played a key role to effectively reduce carbon emissions from automobiles. Therefore, the Taiwan government should revise current EcoCAR subsidy policies to include high fuel efficiency gasoline cars in the program in addition to hybrid and electric cars.
