Dietary survey showed that the daily intakes of dairy products in people of Taiwan were below the recommended levels of dietary guidelines, with 65.2% of the people having less than one serving of dairy intake per day, and the calcium intake was only about 500 mg (the recommended daily calcium intake by DRI for adults is 1000 mg). It is intriguing that people in Taiwan have had low intakes of dairy products while their body weights have been increasing over the years. Dietary intakes of calcium may inhibit fat degradation and stimulate fatty acid biosynthesis, and decrease fatty acid oxidation, leading to increased body weights. Therefore, the main purpose of this proposed study was to investigate whether the dairy intakes affect body weights. We recruited adults (4 men; 11 women) to participate in a randomized 8-wk weight-control program by dividing the patients into 2 groups:1) dairy/calcium intake (DCI) group (calcium 480 mg / day), and 2) controls (no dairy or calcium supplement). Calorie intakes were 1200 Kcal/day for women and 1500 Kcal/day for men. After eight weeks, body weights, body composition, calcium supplement intake, and blood biochemistry values were assessed. The results showed that body composition within each group was significantly decreased (P<0.05). In blood biochemistry values, S-GPT, uric acid and triglyceride levels were significantly decreased only within the DCI group. When the two groups were compared, only the triglyceride level was significantly decreased (P<0.05). Blood 25-OH vitamin D3 level was slightly increased but was within the standard range, indicating that the dairy/calcium supplement does not affect the vitamin D level. This trial was registered at the China Medical University Hospital & Research Ethics Center register as CMUH103-REC1-157.
