Abstract
Chen, Xian-Zhang (1428-1500) was a great scholar in the middle Ming Dynasty, and he was also a philosopher, a poet, an educator, and a calligrapher. He blended the philosophical thinking of nature together in his calligraphy, thinking that the purpose of writing was to rectify his mind, cultivate his emotion, and adjust his personality. Moreover, by using original Bean Mao instead of a writing brush, he was diligent in calligraphy creation. His vigorous, seasoned, simple, free, and graceful writing style made his calligraphy popular in the world.
The essay primarily discusses Chen, Xian-Zhang writing idea and artistic calligraphic characteristics, and through analyzing and comparing the writing, structure, and order of his calligraphy to explore the calligraphy traits and achievement. In particular, his Mao Long Pen was an invention in writing tools in the calligraphy history, which made it having original meaning, and showed the artistic feeling and original calligraphy trait in Mao Long calligraphy. The Mao Long calligraphy had great influences on the contemporary calligraphy development and had valuable status in the history.
The essay talks about how studying environment influences Chen, Xian-Zhang through his life, teachers, outings, pupils at first; then, it explores the path of his calligraphic development and idea. We can know how his calligraphic creations and style appear, further understands and analyzes the artistic characteristics of Mao Long Pen, then discuss the calligraphic style of Chen, Xian-Zhang. Moreover, through viewing the characteristics of the appearance of his writings, we can understand completely; then analyzing an comparing the skills, together with the status and comments on calligraphic arts, we can understand the influence on later ages.
