Therefore, boundaries between nations are becoming more blurry. In a new era of information economy, simplified working procedure has not been able to enhance efficiency and efficacy. However, a working model as a team of project management will be relatively popular- knowledge-based working model that gradually replaces conventional ones. It is expected that working space in the near future will be manifested extensively in multiple aspects.
The purpose of this study is to investigate knowledge workers’ preference and perception for working spaces. Design factors from the study account for prerequisites of knowledge-based working space design in terms of literature review and case study analyses. It is to set up the working space design by analyzing each of design factors. An entity space is applied as a case study, which has four types of knowledge-based working designs that analyze working spatial allocation and select six types of stylistic space design pictures evaluated and modified by experts. The most optimal space design will be selected via questionnaires based on design process, design evaluation, interactive relations of professional interlocution and other factors.
Knowledge-based workers have preferences for an open-space design that facilitates activities but it is relatively significant to strike a balance between privacy and interaction. And followings are the study results for preferences of efficiency in space models: (1) approval of open office design, (2) preference for working spaces adjacent to windows, (3) disapproval of discussion space in working zone, (4) approval of independent telephone rooms in an open space, (5) approval of seats in a space that must be functionally and pragmatically employed, (6) preference for a space with a 120-centimeter partition.
The knowledge worker approves close and open meeting rooms that facilitate formal and informal meetings and cooperation, but visual privacy needs to be taken into consideration in the meeting room design. And the following are the study results for preferences of cooperative learning: (1) approval of separation of working zone and meeting zone, (2) acceptance of an open meeting zone in working space design, (3) approval of main aisles that need to separate from the working space, (4) approval of a space design in meeting room that should be of considerable creativity.
The knowledge-based worker accepts an alternative of working space and partial supported space while socialized recreational activity space should be far-away from working space in order to avoid disturbance. And the following are the study results for preferences of interactive relationship: (1) approval of a working space lobby in which guest waiting zone and tea cupboard are installed, (2) approval of discussion room that is functioned as a break area, (3) preference for installing a bar counter in working space, (4) approval of a pantry in combination with a break area and preference for design of a break area that should be of considerable creativity.
The following are the study results for preferences of space design style: (1) approval of layouts and routes of a working space that are more crucial than its decorations, (2) the style of working space design that must be reflected to a enterprise’s image, (3) approval of working space design equipped with unique styles that facilitate to enhance productivity, (4) workers who regard working space as important spatial orders as follows: a. staffs’ seat b. meeting room c. restroom, (5) workers who expect to increase spatial orders in working space: a. staffs’ break area, b. meditation and fitness rooms, c. garden, (6) workers who regard a working space should have creative spatial orders: a. exhibit center, b. brainstorming room, c. fitness room, (7) workers feel pleasant as working in “contemporary and concise” style of a space, (8) workers feel creative and productive as working in “creative and unique” style of space.
As a whole, space designs deal with some fundamental issues such as noise, inefficient route, documental privacy and working confidentiality. However, space design planning plays a vital part in facilitating interaction and inspiring creativity. The result of this study is not only to set up a good example of working space design model in order to live up to knowledge-based working behavior, but also to provide enterprises and designers with design guidelines.
