With major changes in the global climate, extreme weather causes the increased frequency of various natural disasters. In addition, man-made disasters such as war, terrorist actions and industrial pollution are also popular recently, making the humanitarian actions be taken seriously by numerous humanitarian organizations. In order to enhance the relief efficiency, avoid the uneven distribution of supplies, and delivery delays during the rescue, it is necessary to pay attention to communication, coordination and cooperation among humanitarian organizations.
This study collected relevant information through the humanitarian organization related sites. Social network analysis model is utilized to analyze the relationship between the networks of international humanitarian organizations. It is found that most of the headquarters of humanitarian organizations are located in the industrialized countries, especially in North America and Europe. Among them, the headquarters of the non-governmental humanitarian organization mostly located in Europe. The humanitarian organizations sponsored by the United Nations are found to involve more relief funds than other non-governmental humanitarian organization.
The results of social network analysis indicate that the higher the natural disaster's degree centrality, the more serious damage the natural disaster incurs. Moreover, the higher the humanitarian organization's degree centrality, the more participation the organization involved in relief operations. Some humanitarian organizations possess low degree centrality while having high betweenness centrality, indicating that although these organizations play an important role of coordination of relief operations in spite of the shortage of relief resources. Finally, this study compared the relief operations between Haiti earthquake and typhoon Haiyan to study the performance of humanitarian organizations. The results show that the network density for typhoon Haiyan's is higher than that of the Haiti earthquake. It indicates that the cooperative effort among the humanitarian organization for typhoon Haiyan typhoon’s relief operations is better than Haiti earthquake’s. It is suggested that humanitarian organizations provide different types of relief items and assistances according to the nature of the disasters.
