Abstract
Children, the pillars of the country in the future, are the hopes and have a significant influence on the development of every aspect in our society. Therefore, the life styles of their family and the arrangement of the after-school leisure activities are the main concerns of the educators. In this study, the purpose was not only aimed at understanding the life styles of learners’ family, but also conducted to explore the relationship between the family styles and the types of their leisure participation.
The participants of the research were the 3rd and 4th graders in Da-Chu elementary school of Taoyuan and their guardians. A self-edited questionnaire was developed and applied as the main instrument to collect data. 538 copies were distributed and 88% of them, 472 valid copies, were returned. In addition, the research analyzed the data by applying descriptive statistic analysis, independent-samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and regression analysis in SPSS. The findings were presented as follows. (1) The majority of the interviewed guardians were mothers of the pupils with an age between 31 to 40 years old. Furthermore, the highest level of education that most of the guardians had achieved was senior high school or above and their jobs were mainly professional staffs with a monthly family income between 40 to 70 thousand dollars. (2) A comparative analysis about life styles derived from the questionnaire revealed that the average score for the item “family-centered” was the highest while that of “fashionable” was the lowest. As for the types of leisure participation, on the other hand, the average score of “life amusement” was higher than “sports and recreation.” (3) The interrelationships among the variables, such as the guardians’ genders, marital status, ages, relationship with children, the highest level of education, the occupations, and monthly family income individually and obviously influence the life styles of the family. (4) The results also indicated that the genders of the guardians, the relationship between the guardians and the children, the highest level of education, the occupations, and monthly family income have significant influence on the types of learners’ leisure participation. On the contrary, the ages of the guardians and marital status make no differences with the types of pupils’ activities. (5) Two factors of the life styles, including “knowledge and art” and “social interaction”, have positive and reciprocal affection on the leisure participation.
In sum, it was suggested that the guardians, educators in schools, and future researcher adopt the findings as the reference materials.
