In Taiwan, drug abuse and dependence is a growing issue affecting most segments of society. This study focuses on the participants'' lived experience of drug using, addiction and recovery. The study presents a qualitative approach to inquiry with narratives as the method. The use of the fieldwork-based participant-observation and in-depth interviews guided the data collection and analysis. This is an exploration of individual experience of addiction and recovery in Taiwan, conducted with 7 men and 3 female, and the findings of this study give an account of addiction and recovery process. Three major themes of addiction emerge from the analysis: incorrigible conduct-uncontrollable adherence, inexcusable compromise- bundled life and inevitable corruption- tragic descent. Three major themes of recovery emerge from the analysis: dawning-darkness deepened, morning broken, disclosing light-old things passed, all become new and unfinished story- the bereaved released, the suppressed liberated. This study provides a better understanding of what the addicts’ world is like and also demonstrates the participant''s experience of endless misery, and falling to the bitter end into the world of addiction. The results of this study will enhance the health care professionals’ knowledge and understanding of the individual’s experience of addiction. This knowledge is essential for the clinicians to understand this experience as a framework for planning and implementing appropriate treatment.
