Some studies show sulfasalazine have anticancer activities for various human tumours. Vitamin E succinate is a redox silent analog of the fat soluble vitamin alpha-tocopherol. Previous researches have demonstrated that vitamin E succinate is also used as an anticancer drug for various tumors. In addition, vitamin E succinate is not toxicity to normal tissues and cells. According to these studies, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether vitamin E succinate can affect sulfasalazine-induced anticancer activity for human cancer cells. Moreover, the mechanisms of vitamin E/ sulfasalazine-induced cytotoxic effects are investigated in this study. Our results show that sulfasalazine and vitamin E succinate can inhibit cell growth on different tumor cells depending on different concentrations of sulfasalazine and vitamin E succinate. In addition, the anticancer activities are time- and dose-dependent manner with sulfasalazine plus vitamin E succinate treatment. Although this experiment confirms vitamin E succinate can enhance sulfasalazine-induced anticancer activity, we need to consider the dose of vitamin E succinate and sulfasalazine. Therefore, this study provides a possibly potential method for cancer therapy by using combination treatment of vitamin E succinate and sulfasalazine.
