In recent years, musicals in Taiwan have become very popular, leading to many famous classical musicals being staged here. The number of musical movies played in cinemas has also increased. As a result of this trend, in 2012 the annual drama performance of Department of German Language and Culture Fu-Jen Catholic University was the Berlin Musical Linie 1, a musical set in the German capital Berlin. The play was performed completely in German, whilst Chinese subtitles were simultaneously displayed on the screen to give the audience a better understanding of the content. Since the greatest qualities of the play Linie 1 lie in its cultural and linguistic characteristics, the question arises as to whether these qualities remain in the translated Chinese subtitles, and if the Taiwanese audience can appreciate the play on the same level as the German audience. This is the focus of this thesis. Linie 1, the focus of this study, is a 1986 musical work by the German child and youth theater writer Volker Ludwig. The play is unlike most plays, since the characters in Linie 1 are all from different sectors of Berlin society. They not only speak the standard German, but also Berlinerisch. In addition, the author also used several different language variants, such as youth vernacular and slang to highlight the personalities of the characters and the former multiculturalism of Berlin society. The purpose of this study is to investigate the basis of the functional theory of translation, the translated Chinese subtitles, to see if the specific linguistic features of the German musical Linie 1 could ever be adequately translated into Chinese. The question is whether Taiwanese viewers can, relying on Chinese subtitles, acquire the same sentiments as the audience of the original? The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter concerns the research topic, the research objective, the research method, the structure of the thesis and the presentation of the research corpus. The second chapter introduces functional translation theory. It describes the translation theories of Katharina Reiß, Hans J. Vermeer and Christiane Nord. The third chapter is related to the play Linie 1 and focuses on three main points. The first point is the development of the musical. The second point presents the author Volker Ludwig and gives a synopsis of Linie 1. The third point is about the language of the play, including the forms of dramatic language and the specific linguistic features. The fourth chapter is the main part of the thesis. In this chapter, the specific linguistic features and the results from the translational difficulties are analyzed and appropriate proposals are put forward. The fifth chapter is the final chapter of the thesis and contains the conclusion.
