The specifications of the motor is three-phase, 5 kW at a rated speed of 1350 rpm. The prototype design of the motor is done with the aid of magnetic circuit design software, SPEED, and electromagnetic field analysis based on finite element method software, Flux2D. Results from this study shows that the machine with single-layer winding has higher performance characteristics and is selected for the following study. A sensitivity analysis, Taguchi method and fuzzy Taguchi method is used to the optimal design of the motor for maximum both efficiency and the torque per unit magnet volume and minimum the torque ripple.
