The reconstruction for the community residents after the disaster is not only on physical objects but on the community spirit as well. This study adopted the qualitative research method to explore the sense of place during the early, mid and late days and also depict the living space and tracks of the local residents from the perspective of spatial change. A purposive sample of 30 residents were selected to participate in in-depth interviews. This research used the participant observation method to record the activities of the residents in the community. During the reserch, the relative local documets were collected and the residents’ living space were discussed by using spatial analysis method. A few significant findings are reached as follows: 1. Long Yen Lin community development can be inducted to be 4 periods: before earthquake, post-earthquake transformation period, importing success period, and sustainable managing period. 2. The sense of place shifted from the local and traditional Long An Temple before the 921 earthquake to Long Yen Lin community development after the earthquake. During the earthquake the residents helped one another to overcome their difficulties and thus the sense of place turned strong. Now, the establishment of Long Yen Lin Welfare Association not only promotes the local people to participate in the community activities but also strengthen the interactions and deepen the emotions among the members. 3. In terms of spatial change of the residents in Long Yen Lin community, the elders’ living space is mainly in the Long Yen Lin villages. As the way of using the space is different, so different meanings for the space generate. Deputy family’s living space is also mainly in the Long Yen Lin villages, while the work space shifts from working outside to staying in the community which forms a sense of putting down roots. The post adolescents’ living space remains similar both nowadays and before the 921 earthquake.
