Summary: | 碩士 === 朝陽科技大學 === 工業設計系 === 104 === ‘Pun’ refers to something that connects or takes on two different cognitions. In rhetoric, its usage is common. Many scholars have defined and classified it, but few people have put forward its usage outside the realm of literature. This study revolves around the application and analysis of ‘puns’ in images, categorizing image puns into ‘image graph pun’ and ‘image sense pun’ based on Ferdinand de Saussure’s concepts of signifier and signified. The process, expression and possible interpretation of these two puns will be discussed and used as the direction of creativity.
A series of creative work involves the use of hand image as the major sign and combines or assembles the hand image with other symbols. The end product reflects the meaning of image pun. First series of work uses image graph pun as the theme of creativity. The choice is based on the appearance of image with ‘ambiguous images’ as the major way of expression. Hands and images of plants are combined, through viewers’ shift of attention, to create two different visual cognitions. Second series of work employs image sense pun as the axis of creativity. The choice involves the definition of image along with combination of hand images and other objects, and application of different rhetoric to help images reach the meaning of pun.
With the use of creative work in series, limited choices of signs and creative topics, simplification of elements of signs and guided theme from the series, viewers can easily interpret the implied messages from clues, thus achieve the purpose of pun.
