In 2011,career counseling manuals for junior high school students have been implemented to help junior high school students have better career planning. The researcher has been teaching counselling courses for years, witnessing that the changes of education policy have put more emphasis on counselling. The enactment of the twelve year compulsory education aims to break the myth of elite schools and education rush Career counselling manual is designed to help junior high school students keep track of their learning, self-exploration and career-exploration. Therefore, career counselling manual serves as a critical indicator of students’ career decision and reference for senior high schools. However, whether career counselling manual really has its effect on students’ career planning and how students perceive its functions are unknown. Thus, the present study aims to investigate these two issues. 9th -graders from a junior high school in Gueishan District, Taoyuan City were recruited as participants. Career counselling manuals were collected and analyzed with documentary analysis. Focus group interviews were also employed to interview six participants to probe into the utilization of career counselling manuals. The findings are summarized as followed: (1) Career counselling manuals of junior high school are oriented toward construction of self-concept. (2) No significant growth was found in terms of students’ self-exploration. (3) Students’ recognition of occupational environment is insufficient. (4) Parents are the major determinant in students’ ultimate career decision-making. (5) The promotion of the researcher''s career counselling manual using-skills. In light of the current study, some suggestions were offered to the utilization of career counselling manuals, teachers and future research.
