Mr. Hottinger S. C. Chang was a distinguished translator and litterateur in China during the 19th century. He was more of a scholar and religionist engaged in the field of studies on Chinese as well as western cultures. In his life he had seen the war against Japan and civil war between Chinese Nationalist and communist forces suffering from the instability of political situation in turbulent times. He was firmly opposed to revolution by force in the 1920’s but changed position for supporting armed struggle against Japan after the 918 incident in 1931. Then he stood firm against civil war in China during the years of 1946-1949. It can be seen on the transition of his thoughts in different times. Proclaimed as the preacher of Christian Doctrine, he was very much concerned about Christian Socialism and had been making efforts to preach the “Christian Doctrine” in his lifetime.
The main contents of this thesis is to present a systematic study on the biography of Mr. Hottinger S. C. Chang, particularly his thoughts in his lifetime, based on a selection of his works and writings: “Christian Doctrine”, “Youth Models” and “Revolutionary Carpenters”. His representative work, “Speeches on Christian Doctrine (1935)” presented a study on definition, principles and objective of “Christian Doctrine.” Another two of his writings: “Religious view of Christian” and “Christianity and Socialist Movement” seeks to explore the attitude of the Christian doctrine advocate toward the universe, human life and the society and to eliminate the conflict between Christianity and socialism. “Youth Models” (1928) and “The Revolutionary Carpenter” (1939) were two historical novels respectively translated and created by him based on the struggle of Jesus Christ. These two books portray no divine nature of Jesus Christ but center on the personalities and thoughts of Jesus Christ, which echoes “Christian Doctrine” and revolutionary “view of Jesus Christ” he had been making efforts to work on.
In an attempt to make reforms on the entire Chinese society, Mr. Hottinger S. C. Chang created “Christian Doctrine” and tried to merge the religion of Christianity into Chinese society. However, against the entire Chinese political background at that time, it was not only declined and even ignored by the broad society, but its destiny was just doomed to termination under the rule of “Socialist China.”
