The study is mainly divided into three major subjects, the first is to look up documents to understand the geological characteristics of cataclinal slopes, and then carry out field investigation and simplify the actual features of the cataclinal slope to establish physical modeling experiment, as to observe the deformation process and characteristics of failure in cataclinal slopes without daylight. The subjects of experiments are categorized into two groups of A and B. For type A, parameters of the model include the angle of slip surface, model depth, model thickness and joint spacing are varied. For type B, parameters such as slope angle, angle of slip surface, rainfall intensity, and rainfall pattern are varied. It is found from experiments results that in experiment of varying the angle of slip surface, the deformation of dip slopes is faster and more obvious when the angle of slip surface is greater. From experiments of different thickness of models, it is clearly observed that the thicker of the model, the deformation is the lesser obvious as well as the longer to failure. In experiments of varying rainfalls intensity, the greater of rainfalls the more obvious and significant of deformation or failure. Among three various patterns of rainfall, post-peak type rainfall is the most obvious and the time of failure is the fastest. From these experiments, it is capable to preliminary predict the cataclinal slope type of deformation or failure, and consequently to provide reference for disaster prevention.
