They are supposed to expose higher concentrations of dust. These ingredients contain wood dust and calcium silicate, crystalline free silica, gypsum and other mineral dust. Which hard wood dust and quartz patterns crystalline silica has been classified as human carcinogens by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It is necessary to control the dust concentration in those job sites. Although the commercially electrical fan bag filters type dust collectors are available. However, bulky and heavy weight and affect the using willingness of these workers. In this research, we simulated an insufficient ventilation work site in laboratory and cutting calcium silicate boards to evaluate the dust collecting efficiency of the new Venturi tube dust collector. The cooling air stream from circular saw was introducing in a Venturi tube. One to three holes on Venturi tube throat part will suck dust and flow into filtering bag. Dust sampling and analysis methods follow up CLA4002 and CLA4001 by the Ministry of Labour of Taiwan. The results showed that three holes Venturi tube dust collector was most efficient. The efficiency of collecting calcium silicate dust was between 40% and 60%. When using this Venturi tube dust collector, it was estimated over 90% chance of qualifying the fourth type dust Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of Taiwan. Although, it still unable to comply PEL of the dust containing free crystalline silica. The Venturi principle has the potential for the development of small size dust collector without external power. Further studies are recommended on modifying the size and number of holes on Venturi tube, in order to enhance the dust collection efficiency.
