Whether it is lock screw fastener pairs or holes positioning, drilling operations are required to carry out in advance. The trained personnel, machine equipment, drill’s material properties and operating parameters, etc. are all important factors to make the process smoothly. One can roughly divide drilling process into three parts. First, drills hit the surface of the workpiece. Second, drills go inside the workpiece but not yet breakthrough the other side of it. Third, drills break through the surface of the workpiece. How to start a drilling process with quick, efficient, continuous, reducing defects and loss is worth to study. This research investigates the dynamic characteristics of the drilling and cutting process through experimental and analytical way. The natural frequency, buckling phenomenon of the drill during idling, in contact with, or inside the workpiece are evaluated thoroughly.
