Improvement of the economic environment and advances in medicine and public health extended the average lifetime and resulted in population aging. In addition, increases of education and employment of women led to low birth rates, which then caused significant changes in the family patterns and weakened the pre-existing family care system. Last but not least, chronic illness and disability accompanied with aging also have increased the demand of long-term care of the elderly. Taken together, they are challenges to the families and also our society and country. The long-term care system in our country originated from the idea of social welfare charity. Because of the aging population and low birth rates, the demand surged. The government then began to promote the long-term care industry in 2002 to incorporate non-governmental forces to increase the supply and the variety of care. Innovation for services is a must for such industrialization to meet various customer needs and enhance service values. This study adopted qualitative research methods through reviewing of academic journals and information from the government, industry, and media. After combining with the in-depth interviews of experts and scholars, we summarized the performance of service innovation in the long-term care industry with the perspective of actual practice to give the following conclusions and opinions: 1.The industry of the long-term care of the elderly has diversified. 2.Institution of different characteristics showed various service innovation. 3.Development of information technology in the long-term care industry did not meet expectations. 4.Policies and regulations should make appropriate modifications in accordance with the needs of actual practice and environmental changes. Finally, we provided recommendations for the industry of future research. We hope to contribute to the innovation of the elderly long-term care services.
