Accordingly, to deliver products in their intact and undamaged states is always an important requirement for customer service. The packaging activities between manufacturers and consumers play the role for bridging. The purpose of packaging is to protect products from qualitative change in order to meet requirements for health and safety. This process is important in that it helps protect products, facilitate distributions and uses, and promote consumption. The packaging equipment and facilities are used to meet the requirements for consistent packaging quality and mass production. This study reviews relevant literatures, briefly describes the difficulties faced by Taiwan local SMEs and the possible solutions, explores the business circumstances and trends of local packing equipment sector, and finally provides summary about the relevant governmental policies and promotion activities for packing equipment sector.
This study investigates the packaging equipment sector in Taiwan, and finds its annual export is about US$5 billions, and most of the packing equipment is exported to mainland China, the United States, Southeast Asia and India. The major types of packaging equipment include the followings:[blow bag machine, measuring machine, filling machine, sealing machine], [shrink packaging machine], [food equipment], [printing machines, labeling machines, spray printing machines, printing presses], [equipment for folding, producing and packaging cardboard boxes, paper bags and cartons], [labeller, trapping label machine], [vacuum packaging machine], [wrapping machine, strapping machine, baler, dispenser]. Except of materials companies, more than 90% packaging machinery manufacturers and suppliers in Taiwan are SMEs. The cluster effect is found in packaging machinery sector, mainly in the cities of New Taipei and Taichung.
In this study, a questionnaire survey including section for participant’s basic information, as well as 29 assessment items for SMEs difficulties was conducted, and 160 valid responses were received. The I-S Model matrix analysis was conducted to find the areas needed to be improved. It is found the important, but less satisfactory performance areas include the following: R&D, including technical cooperation with local or foreign partners, and to apply for patents and other intellectual property protection; Marketing, including establishment of agent and distributor networks; Financial & Accounting, including cost of production; and Human Resources area, including development of sales forces. It is believed our discussions will be helpful for finding solutions for difficulties faced by packaging equipment SMEs.
