For research methods, this study conducted a questionnaire survey, and used the “scale on mathematical problem-solving ability of higher graders in elementary school” as the research instrument. The scale included 5 major dimensions: number & calculation, quantity and actual measurement, geometry, algebra, and statistics & probability, and a total of 10 items. The 10 items were divided into 3 sub-items according to mathematical problem-solving ability at 3 stages: “translation,” “integration,” and “execution.” Each sub-item was scored 1 point. In the end, 164 students completed the paper-based examination and the collected data were then quantitatively analyzed.According to the examination results, this study performed statistical analysis on scores at 3 stages of mathematical problem-solving, and further investigated the correlation with difference in mathematical problem-solving ability. The main research findings are:(1)The average score of 3 stages, “translation,” “integration,” and “execution” was 7.524 points, 6.677 points, and 5.896 points, respectively.(2)Translational mathematical problem-solving ability and integrative mathematical problem-solving ability were significantly positively correlated with executive mathematical problem-solving ability (p<.001). (3)Gender did not have a significant effect on mathematical problem-solving ability of the 6th graders in elementary school.(4)Socioeconomic status of father has a significant effect on mathematical problem-solving ability of the 6th graders in elementary school.(5)Socioeconomic status of mother did not have a significant effect on mathematical problem-solving ability of the 6th graders in elementary school.(6)After school mathematics class in cram school did not have a significant effect on mathematical problem-solving ability of the 6th graders in elementary school. During questionnaire completion, due to the influence of factors, such as family’s socioeconomic status, past mathematics learning experience, and subjective perception of self, the completed answers of the 6th graders in this study might not be objective or authentic enough. Future study is advised to expand the research subjects to other administrative districts or urban areas to further compare whether there is any difference in perception of mathematical problem-solving ability. Moreover, qualitative research methods (e.g. in-depth interviews and focus group) can be used to investigate the differences and similarities in perception of mathematical problem-solving ability of the 6th graders from the perspective of students, students’ parents, and mathematics teachers to further obtain more complete research results.
