In a spine minimally invasive surgery, due to the narrow area for operation to avoid nervous system and intervertebral disc injury, a positioning system with millimeter accuracy is necessitated. The load-modulation tag contains of two miniaturized bow-tie antennas, two SPDT switches and two oscillators. The advantages of the modulated-tag design include 1) the signal distinguish from environmental clutters, 2) higher FMCW beating frequency to avoid DC closed-in phase noise, and 3) identification of the tag, attributed from the modulation frequency. The operation principle, circuit design, package effect and layout for compactness will be discussed. The measurement results shows that six different tags can be clearly identified in two meters.
