Summary: | 碩士 === 元智大學 === 資訊社會學碩士學位學程 === 103 === The rapid development of ICT technology drives the rapid increase of social networking sites. The most representative one, Facebook, not only provides a new model of interpersonal communication, makes people able to maintain the existing network of friends and find a friend that you have lost contact with, but also helps develop new social circles and so that enhance a person’s social resources. The purpose of this study, first of all, is to examine whether students can take advantage of technical affordance of social networking site, Facebook, to expand more layers of interpersonal relationships and acquire more social resources. The second research question of this study is to investigate whether students have more social resources that obtained from the interpersonal interaction on the Facebook show a higher degree of satisfaction on psychological well-being.
A total of 194 network survey questionnaires were collected from the random sample of junior class and the first year graduate students in the College of Informatics, Yuan Ze University. In all, the findings of this research suggested that use of Facebook didn’t significantly extend a person’s layers of social relationships. Nevertheless, college students who often update their Facebook information show a greater number of heterogeneous friends from different occupations. This in turns would increase a student’s acquisition of material resources. Secondly, those who have more emotional resources on the Facebook did show a higher degree of satisfaction on psychological well-being. In sum, the findings suggested that most of social resources were acquired from the close network of people on the Facebook, resource acquisition from weak ties or friends of friends on the Facebook were relatively limited.
