碩士 === 元智大學 === 中國語文學系 === 103 === The purpose of this study is to analyze the language ability and use of Vietnamese-Chinese for Cantonese and Ngái dialect. As the matter of fact, Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh which will be the regions of this study have the highest population of Chinese in Vietnam. As the Chinese communities in Dong Nai Province and Ho Chi Minh City are located in a multilingual environment (i.e. Vietnamese, Cantonese, Hakka, Teo-chew, Southern-Min etc.) with Vietnamese as the dominant language, the language contact affects the language change of their first languages to the local languages. However, studies on the language ability and use of Vietnamese-Chinese, especially for Ngái dialect, are rare. They leave a research gap to be filled in. Through this study, the proficiency and use of Cantonese and Ngái dialects by Chinese in Dong Nai Province and Ho Chi Minh City will be presented with their comparison. This research will be helpful in further understanding the use of Chinese dialects in Vietnam.
