However, commercially available distractors can only perform uniaxial-distraction or biaxial-distraction on alveolar bone when alveolar bone requires height reconstruction. After alveolar bone formation reoperation is often required to trim the excess bone. This study developed a new multi-axial distraction for improving irregular alveolar bone inclination defects. Functional tests were conducted confirming the product safety and efficacy in clinical use. We analyzed the clinical problem along with commercially available alveolar distractors and the related patents and regulations. After completing our examination of distractors and the related issues we began mechanism design and manufacturing. In order to meet processing procedures and clinical needs, we conducted many product improvement iterations, producing a successful multi-axial distractor design and manufacturing process. After manufacturing multi-axial distractors we conducted functional tests to confirm the efficacy and safety of the proposed multi-axial distractor. Six functional distractor tests were conducted, screw test (ASTM F543), bone plate test (ASTM F382), ball strength test, pullout test, bone plate welding strength test, screw strain test. Multiple technologies were integrated in this study to obtain a successful multi-axial distractor design and manufacturing process. This study developed a multi-axial distractor to assist orthopedists in improving irregular alveolar bone inclination defects for improved reconstruction results.
