What’s worse, there are few multimedia teaching materials on Taiwan’s cultural issues, not to mention those related to language education. This study selected videos from the cultural topic page of Taiwan Academy, an e-learning portal for Mandarin education, and conducted a survey by distributing questionnaires to 73 foreign learners in order to obtain an overview of their experience and opinions. The survey result shows that while the videos satisfied the students, they were ineffective in improving their learning. To make the videos more educational, as well as spark viewers’ interest in learning, the author used the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages(CEFR)as the basis to classify various teaching materials that can be integrated into the videos. Next, foreign learners of the STUST Chinese Language Center were taken as the research subjects, and three videos: “Jiufen”, “To Maintain Good Health” and “Baseball” were selected to accompany the content of the teaching materials. With the “Natural Approach Syllabus” and “Functional Syllabus”, three teaching sessions were arranged for the purpose of exploring two methods of integrating culturally-themed videos into Mandarin teaching: (1)the themes of the videos closely connected with the textbook content; and (2)the videos serving as an extension to enable the students to better understand the cultural implications of the textbook content. In the final section of this study, two cultural categorization standards proposed by Lin(2014)and Threshold(1990)were employed to systematically examine and analyze the topics of the cultural pages, and suggestions for expanding the video topics were also presented. This study is expected to serve as an initiative that ushers in more possibilities of applying current multimedia cultural databases to teaching scenarios, and to offer some preliminary advice as well as directions for the future expansion and establishment of the multimedia resources in Taiwan Academy.
