Summary: | 碩士 === 文藻外語大學 === 華語文教學研究所 === 103 === With the development of modern mass media such as newspapers, magazines, and the Internet, the speed of people’s ease of acquiring and updating information has become more and more efficient. In today’s fast-paced world, it is vital for language learning to catch up with the continuous growth in technology. The most direct tools for language learners during their learning journey are the teaching materials. A very successful and effective example of the teaching material is the English learning magazines, which continuously have up to date contents and suitable learning curriculum for their subscribers.
With the above observation, this research focuses on the Chinese learning material and student magazines available today. This research explains how the Chinese learning material is not updated at a frequent basis and has failed to serve the learners’ needs for updated material. Moreover, this research also discusses the content and layout which affect learners’ motivation enormously and resulted in an impact on learners’ achievement. Therefore, there are two hypotheses in this study:
Hypothesis one: The Chinese learning magazine combines the two essential elements which positively correlate with the students’ self-learning outcomes. The content is written based on the learners’ needs as a fundamental aspect. In addition, the writing layout is organized to directly allow the learners to easily relate to their emotional content.
Hypothesis two: Within a period of time, the self-learners acquired an improvement of their language ability with the usage of the Chinese learning material. This shows that the usage of the two essential elements in the written content clearly forms a positive correlation between the language acquiring ability of self-learners and their learning results.
In order to prove these hypotheses, the author has created a Chinese language learning magazine, Hua Yu Zhi, for this research project. The research conclusions are based on a language proficiency test and a self-evaluation survey from the participated self-learners. The results are listed below:
1. There is a positive feedback on the self-learners language achievements after comparing their language proficiencies before and after using Hua Yu Zhi. Hence the first hypothesis is confirmed.
2. The participated self-learners reflected a positive feedback on their self-learning abilities after using Hua Yu Zhi in a self-evaluation survey. As a result, there is a positive relationship between learners’ self-learning abilities and learning results when Hua Yu Zhi was implemented as the course material; hence the second hypothesis is confirmed.
3. The useful and informational content and user-friendliness of Hua Yu Zhi resulted in positive feedback from the participants. With the recommendations and feedback from the users, this would serve a great foundation in regards to the future improvement on the updated version of the magazines.
Therefore, this research suggests Chinese learning magazines should implement the exemplary factors from English learning magazines in order to provide the future Chinese learners with better language learning experience and outcome.
