The sample consisted of 1607 fifth-grade students from elementary schools in Taiwan. Survey method was adopted for collecting data. Instruments used in this study included “Children Personality Traits Scale,” “Coping strategies Inventory,” and “Internet Addiction Inventory.” Data were analyzed with the use of statistical methods such as t-test and path analysis. The key findings are as follows: 1.Female students had a distinctly higher level of neuroticism personality traits, agreeableness personality traits, problem-solving and support-seeking coping strategies than male students. 2.Concerning Internet addiction, male students took up distinctly larger portion than female students. 3.Student with neuroticism personality traits spent more hours surfing the Internet weekly. Students who spent more than 36 hours on the Internet in average per week adapted escape coping strategies even more frequently and showed a higher level of Internet addiction. 4.Neuroticism personality had a significant, positive effect on seeking support, emotion coping and escape coping, and escape coping strategy mediated an effect of neuroticism personality on Internet addiction. 5.Conscientiousness personality had a significant, negative effect on problem-solved coping and seeking support, and had a positive effect on emotion coping and escape coping. Moreover, escape coping strategy mediated an effect of conscientiousness personality on Internet addiction. A number of suggestions for educational guidance and educational administration were proposed on the basis of these findings.
