Due to different target applications, the IoT may use various system structure, and possibly with different communication, software and hardware technologies. In this research, we successfully implemented gateway function on an Android-based cellular phone, which can search, connect, monitor and control a target Bluetooth low energy (BLE) device. Furthermore, via the BLE communication, the cellular phone gateway can read data from the controlled device, and then via the Wi-Fi local area wireless networking, upload the data to a personal computer, which represents a remote terminal unit (RTU) in an IoT system. Due to its high potential in IoT applications, in this research, we choose BLE as the communication technology for the interconnection between the cellular phone gateway and the controlled device. We studied the BLE’s various version, communication and control architecture, parameter setting and packet formats, and accomplished a program on the BLE development board. We also chieve data transmission between the gateway and the controlled device. We also accomplished a corresponding control program on the cellular phone gateway with the required capabilities of searching, connecting, data reading and writing to a target BLE device. In summary, the accomplished results have reached the expected goal of our University-Industry Cooperation Project, and can be applied in IoT applications such as intelligent home, intelligent office and agricultural monitoring systems.
