Summary: | 博士 === 國立臺南藝術大學 === 藝術創作理論研究所博士班 === 103 === As one of the important aesthetic theories during the modern era, formalism is rarely used as a method in the contemporary art era for viewing works. Formalism stems from the aesthetic perspective of formalist, Clement Greenberg (1909-1994). Greenberg valued media in and of themselves, and emphasized the flatness of paintings. He opposed representation, and did not focus on symbolic meanings. Thus, he was relatively incapable of discussing the complex symbolism and meta-history of the works that flooded the arts after the 1970s.
The researcher believes that the researcher’s own creative method is particularly focus on “The Deployable Logic of Complex factors”, and present as the logic of “From Complexity to Simplification.” The logic of “From Complexity to Simplification” still shares a close affinity with formalism Greenberg mentioned. The concepts outlined in “From Complexity to Simplification” and Greenberg’s statements about formalism both wield attitudes that are concerned with creative methods, while also putting an emphasis on the media itself. The concept in “From Complexity to Simplification” further incorporates elements of the manufacturing paradox, incorporating re-presentation, symbol, and meta-history into the essential content of works. These elements also allow the focus to return to the media itself. Thus, the concept of ”From Complexity to Simplification” forms a possible shift in contemporary art’s formalism. In conclusion, after a review of the concepts outlined in “From Complexity to Simplification”, the researcher compares his own position in contemporary art through the cross-dialect of formalism. At the same time, the researcher also revisits formalism, renovating it for the imagination of the contemporary era.
